Britain's "Coastline Runner" and Our Ocean's Hero
When it comes to saving our oceans from the ever-increasing threat of plastic pollution, Luke Douglas Home, popularly known as the "Coastline Runner", is leading the charge in the most unique way imaginable. Laced up in his trusty Vibram FiveFingers running shoes, Luke sprints into action, rescuing our coasts from the clutches of harmful plastic waste.
Every Step Counts
Luke's journey so far is impressive; with every kilometer he runs, plastic is prevented from contaminating our waters. From the picturesque landscapes of Folkestone to the serene shores of Greece, Luke's footsteps echo the message of environmental conservation. An astounding 650 kg of plastic waste has been diverted away from our oceans, thanks to his dedication. With the World Plogging Championships on the horizon, Luke is gearing up to represent Britain in Genoa, Italy, amplifying his message and igniting global attention towards the pressing issue of oceanic "plastification".
To give you a sneak peek of his journey:
- Folkestone (8th of June): 10 Km resulting in a bag of waste
- Galveston Texas (19th of June): 20 Km with 3 bags collected
Luke's efforts sum up to an astonishing 150 Km run and 75 Kg of waste collected in just a span of a few months.
Recognition and Commendation
It's not just us at Barefoot Junkie who've been captivated by Luke's mission. Andrew Jamieson, Deputy Leader of Norfolk County Council, has been a staunch supporter of the Coastline Runner initiative from the start. Even media giants like The Times have aptly dubbed Luke as the "Litter picking Forrest Gump". A nod to his relentless drive, his active collaborations with councils, landlords, and grassroots initiatives are a testament to his commitment to the cause.
The Road to World Plogging Championships
Luke shares, "To be surrounded by people aware, engaged, and active in this problem will be wonderful, let alone winning any World Plogging Championship medals for GB!" True to his ethos, Luke plans to travel to the championship using the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation available - be it plogging, hitchhiking, train, or bus.
Be part of his journey! Luke will be sharing his experiences on Instagram. Let’s cheer him on, follow his adventure, and be inspired.
Inspiring the Next Generation
In a heartwarming gesture, Luke was recently seen engaging with school pupils in Northumberland’s Newbiggin by Sea. He not only ran from there to Alnmouth but also instilled in them the importance of safeguarding our environment.
